Title: Woodcutters Mine baseline mosquito monitoring report
Authors: Northern Territory. Medical Entomology Branch.
Issue Date: 1996
Publisher: Medical Entomology Branch, Territory Health Services
Abstract: Nicron Resources Limited (Nicron) is the owner of Woodcutters Mine. The mine is situated approximately 80 km south of Darwin (Fig. I). Mining commenced in 1985 but the expansion of mining operations in 1991, with the construction of a new tailings dam, necessitated the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement. An inspection of the site was previously conducted by Mr Peter Whelan (Senior Medical Entomologist, NT Department of Health and Community Services DH&CS) in 1985 and 1992. One recommendation by the DH&CS derived from the 1992 inspection was the implementation of a baseline mosquito numbers for a minimum period of 12 months. This report summarises the results of the first 12 months of baseline monitoring and discusses the implications of the mosquito species, their relative numbers, and the spatial and temporal distribution of the mosquito species in the area. The results of a follow up field inspection on 20 February 1996 are also presented.
