Abstract: Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for the development of many diseases and conditions. The Northern Territory has the highest smoking rates of any state or territory in Australia. This study aims to quantify the effect of smoking on mortality and hospital morbidity among residents of the Northern Territory for the period 1986-1995.
