Abstract: Hermannsburg (NTARIA) is an aboriginal community situated approximately 130 km west of Alice Springs on the Finke River. It has been the site of a Lutheran Mission since 1877. Freehold title to the land has been held by the traditional owners since 1982. The community has a stable population of 900 Arunta and Luritja people, of which about 430 live on 23 outstations. Alice Springs is readily accessible by road the trip taking about 1 1/2 hours. Most provisions are purchased at the Hermannsburg store which offers a wide range of goods equivalent to any small suburban supermarket.
